IMMORTAL is a card-based boardgame that invites players to embark on a journey of self-discovery. The gameplay is designed to closely emulate the cyclical nature of reincarnation and concepts of karma and immortality. Players play as souls on the search for salvation, making moral decisions, both good and bad, that will hopefully lead to the attainment of eternal life.
Blessed by the deities in the fantasy world of Limbo, each soul is given 7 lives to strive for salvation. Players are given complete freedom to make their own decisions in their multiple lives. In order to guide the multitude of souls with divergent desires and passions, the deities have pathed out 4 distinct Ways in order to achieve immortality: the path of Spirit, the path of Strength, the path of Acumen and the path of Wisdom. While the Ways may seem distant and contrasting, they are simply different means to the same end, and the souls know that only through balance will they truly reach their ultimate goal - Immortality.
Immortal's art direction is inspired by the bold line work of cave art and rock carvings, fused with minimalistic modern design. Motifs from various myths, legends and religious stories are reinterpreted to craft the brand new fantasy world of Limbo.
Common tropes from fantasy games are also included to encourage familiarity with new players. Utilising Joseph Campbell's Monomyth model as a guide, major exploits are extracted from the journeys of four famous heroes to be included as Quests in Immortal. These are the cards that players will have to obtain in order to win the game.
The final handcrafted prototype includes techniques to mimic natural weathering, giving the game an aged look while retaining playability and emphasising clarity of information.
